U.S. National Debt Near $40 Trillion

Figures from Fiscal Lab research on gross debt, debt held by the public, and the household burden.

These figures come from Fiscal Lab pages. They measure different stocks of debt, so they are not interchangeable.

Total public debt outstanding

On The Road to $40 Trillion in Debt, total public debt outstanding stood at $39.987 trillion on August 17, 2026. The page says the $40 trillion mark would equal about $117,000 per person, $299,000 per household, and $92 billion per congressional district. The first $1 trillion took from 1776 to 1982. The next step, to $10 trillion, took until 2008. The most recent $10 trillion was added in four years. After the debt limit increased on July 4, 2025, the federal government borrowed another $3.4 trillion in roughly 406 days.

Gross debt and debt held by the public

The September 2026 brief Economic Growth Rates Necessary to Eliminate the Federal Deficit: An Update for 2026 says gross federal debt passed $40 trillion in August 2026. Debt held by the public, the measure used in that brief, stands at $32 trillion, or about 101% of GDP. CBO projects that ratio at 120% by 2036 and 175% by 2056.

An earlier brief put debt held by the public over $29 trillion, about 95% of GDP, with CBO projecting 156% by 2055.

What that means for households

Why America's National Deficit and Debt is Now a Household Problem says debt held by the public is already near the size of the economy, and that GAO projects debt could exceed 250% of U.S. economic output within 30 years if the current path holds.
